I have been writing about KPIs and ROI my entire career, with the topic becoming especially hot and heavy during the dawn of social media. I recall discussing the topic at a digital marketing dinner about 15 years ago, where after several glasses of wine, the bold consensus was to forget direct ROI and instead find inherent value in the new relationships we could garner on socia

As someone who makes a lot of in-person and online transactions, I’m amazed at how much payment processing has evolved. If I’m scrolling Instagram and see a skincare product I’m interested in, I can go to the brand’s shop and make a purchase without even leaving the app. Not to mention how much tap-to-pay transactions have sped up my coffee runs. No matter what kind of purchase I’m making or whether it’s being made online or off, I know that the payment process is taken care of.

TikTok’s advertising momentum is slowing as uncertainty over a potential U.S. ban looms. By the numbers: Ad spend on TikTok grew 19% year-over-year in March, cooling to 11% in April and 6% in May. Total ad spend from January to May 2024 reached $1.5 billion, up 11% from the same period in 2023. Nine out of 20 advertising categories saw month-over-month increases in April.
TikTok implemented new restrictions on ads targeting U.S. teens and introduced AI disclosure requirements for advertisers. Why we care. These changes aim to protect younger users and increase overall ad transparency, potentially impacting how advertisers reach and engage with TikTok’s audience. It’s also an example of a social platform choosing to build stronger guardrails for user privacy rather than having those guardrails imposed on them by legislators.

It isn’t called the attention economy for nothing. Today’s brands don’t just compete with their products or services – they’re vying for a spot in the lives of their customers.
